Global Learning Experiences

Throughout my time as an undergrad at FIU, I participated in several global learning experiences. These experiences helped me gain knowledge and insight into different global perspectives and global topics as well as helped with my professional development.

BOLD Strategic Communications Agency

BOLD is a student-run, faculty lead, strategic communications agency here at FIU. They work with a variety of clients throughout South Florida as well departments here at FIU. During my time in BOLD, I worked as a Social Media Intern for FIU Theatre and moved on to become an Account Executive for the same account where I lead a team in creating various campaigns for the Theatre Department. For the past year, I've served on BOLD's Executive Board as Director of Culture. In this position, I was in charge of finding/booking guest speakers for our meetings, planning/executing workshops and bonding events, creating weekly newsletters for our members, and I oversaw and make sure members were being treated fairly within the organization. Through BOLD, I've met some of the most amazing people who have helped me immensely with my professional development. I've learned what it takes to be a leader and how to work successfully in a team.

Global Learning Student Board

The Global Learning Student Board works with the Office of Global Learning Initiative to help increase and bring awareness to the office and all of the resources they have for students. During my time on the board, I served as the Media Relations Coordinator where I helped aid the OGLI Communications Assistant in marketing and promotion of the Global Learning Program. I also got to collaborate with the board to help strategize methods to increase student engagement with the Office of Global Learning. I've been able to meet some of the most amazing women on this board and hear their stories, culture, and aspirations that inspire me to this day. We also got the opportunity to have guest speakers come in and share their stories and backgrounds with us. Their advice and insight were extremely eye-opening. Being on the board not only helped me gain more insights into the amazing opportunities presented by the Global Learning Department here at FIU but also helped me learn more able myself and how I can implement these global perspectives/awareness into my life as I get ready to graduate.

Women Who Lead Conference 2022

Women Who Lead (WWL) conference was a two-day leadership & career conference designed to enhance the personal, professional & academic leadership development of students at FIU. I was fortunate enough to attend two sessions on the first day of the event. The first session I went to was called "Wise Words: Advice Session for Women Leaders" where we got to talk to Dr. Breny Garcia and Symeria Hudson. Both women are prominent figures who work in high positions within their retrospective workplaces. Hearing about the triumphs and wins they encountered to get to where they are was truly inspiring. The second session I attended was the "First, Only, Female: Women in Traditionally Male-Dominated Fields", where we heard from Dr. Antoinette Smith, Meghan Morin, and Chief Delma K. Noel-Pratt. All of these women held roles in traditionally male-dominated fields. They gave their insights into how they reached those positions and how to be confident in what you do despite what other people say.

Tuesday Roundtable

Throughout the semester, I was able to participate in several Tuesday Roundtables. But, the one that stuck out to me the most was the "Evolution of Femme: From Salem Witches to Madam Vice Presidents" which was presented by  Grisel d'Elena, Advisor and Faculty Fellow at the FIU's Honors College. During this talk, Grisel was joined by her colleague and they discussed The New York Times Article which addressed the topic of a man thinking that Dr.Biden should have Doctor in front of her name because she's a "real doctor". This opened up a discussion of the history of women and how over time, we've had to work harder, look a certain way, act a certain way to be taken seriously within the world. One thing that stuck out to me the most was Grisel's comment where she states "do not let yourself be put into a team to reach a "diversity" quota."
