Global Learning Reflection
My Global Learning Journey
Growing up, I was immersed in Thai culture despite being born in South Florida. My parents made sure to teach me as much as they could about Thailand through music, customs, language, and food. My fascination with learning about my own culture allowed me to truly embrace my Thai heritage and I found joy in sharing it with others who were interested. This also struck my curiosity for learning about other cultures through books, documentaries, or chatting with the people around me.

When I first came to FIU, I knew that there was a huge emphasis on the International part of FIU. But it wasn't until I started to interact more with the students and the Global Learning program that I realized how true the "International" part was. I first started taking Global Learning courses because I had an interest in the world of Anthropology and I noticed several Anthropology courses were GL courses. It was through my "Intro to Anthropology", "Anthropology of Race and Ethnicity", and "World Ethnography" courses that I gained more global awareness of issues that plague different cultures around the world. Some topics I analyzed and studied included: redlining, racial disparity in healthcare, immigration issues, and classism based on skin colors in South America.
My time on the Global Learning student Board has also been such a rewarding one. Working closely with the office that first interested me the most during my time at FIU was an amazing experience. I was able to get a closer look at the wonderful opportunities and resources offered by the office opportunities and work alongside amazing women who also helped me increase my Global Engagement. It was through their encouragement and advice that I hope to use my skills and education in communications as well using my knowledge through Global Learning to further amplify and uplift underrepresented voices in media.
With my experiences, courses, and involvements, I was able to secure an opportunity within the Multicultural Advertising Internship Program (MAIP) after graduation where I will be a part of a class of other minority students looking to diversify the communications industry. With my internship and beyond, I will use the knowledge that I've acquired throughout my time here at FIU and especially through the Global learning program.
